This program only does one thing: It makes an alias of whatever you drop on it, and presents a standard Save dialog to specify where to save the alias, and what to call it. The default folder is the Apple Menu folder, but you can (of course) save it anywhere. If you drop several items onto Aliassistant, you will get a separate Save dialog for each item. (If you try to drop the Trash onto Aliassistant, you will be told that "the Trash cannot be removed from the desktop.")
You can replace existing aliases, if you want them to be different, but Aliassistant will not replace a file that is not an alias. If you find yourself doing this a lot, you can put an alias of your Apple Menu folder into the Apple menu.
Aliassistant requires the Alias Manager (of course!), AppleEvents, and several other things introduced with System 7.0, but it checks for them and will not run if they are not present. I have not tried Aliassistant under System 7.5, but there's no reason it shouldn't work.
I keep it on my desktop, below the disk icons, so that it's always convenient. It is especially useful with an extension like BeHierarchic installed: you can set up folders in your Apple menu for common applications, and install aliases for your most-frequently-used documents into these folders.
